The three basic parts of a dock area

  • Loading ramp (dock leveller): bridges the level difference between the vehicle bed and the warehouse floor.
  • Dock shelter: seals the gap between vehicle and building, preventing rain, dust and heat loss.
  • Wheel chocks and signalling: ensure loading does not begin before the vehicle is secured.

Why think of it as a whole?

When the ramp, the shelter and the high-speed door are chosen separately, dimensions that do not match usually appear. The right approach is to measure the dock height, the vehicle type and the daily vehicle count in a single survey and plan all three pieces of equipment together. This shortens installation time and removes the cost of alterations afterwards.

Additional requirements in the cold chain

In cold stores, the sealing of the shelter and the insulation of the door relate directly to product safety. In these facilities, insulated high-speed doors, shelter profiles that reduce thermal bridging and ramps with floor heating are considered together.

Why is maintenance critical?

The ramp hydraulics, the shelter fabric and the door seals are wearing parts. In facilities without a periodic maintenance plan, a failure usually appears on the busiest dispatch day. A six-month inspection interval is a reasonable starting point for most facilities.
