A high-speed door reinforced against wind load on the facade

A high-speed door that runs trouble-free in an enclosed corridor meets wind pressure once it is moved to the external facade: the curtain balloons, leaves the guides, and in time the motor is strained as well. In the wind-resistant model the curtain is built with horizontal reinforcement bars and the guides with a strengthened profile, so the door keeps its daily rhythm on an exposed facade too.

  • Strengthened guide profile and deep curtain pocket: the curtain does not leave the guide in wind
  • After an impact the curtain re-seats itself, so the line does not stop

Why is wind a problem?

The curtain of a high-speed door is flexible; the very flexibility that is an advantage indoors turns into a drawback under wind pressure outside. The pressure balloons the curtain, it leaves the guides, it creases as it closes, and the motor takes extra load on every cycle. The result is usually frequent breakdowns, a worn curtain and a motor that fails before its time.

How is it reinforced?

  • Horizontal reinforcement bars are set into the curtain at intervals, so it keeps its flat shape under pressure
  • The guide profile is strengthened and the curtain pocket deepened, reducing the margin by which the curtain can escape
  • Curtain weight is increased; seams and edge tapes are chosen for high tensile loads
  • The motor and control unit are set for soft start and stop through frequency control

What do we look at when choosing?

  • Opening size: wind load rises steeply as the curtain area grows
  • Facade orientation and surrounding buildings: the class rises on open sites and near the coast
  • Daily cycle count: in heavy use the weight of the reinforced curtain also sets the motor class
  • Temperature difference: where heat loss matters on the facade, an insulated curtain is considered alongside

The wind class is engineered according to the size of the door and the facade it sits on; during the survey we measure the opening and decide the right level of reinforcement together.
