What does the resistance period mean?

Fire doors are classified by their resistance period (for example 60 or 120 minutes). That period is the time for which the door retains its integrity under test conditions. Which period is required on a project is determined by the occupancy class of the building and the fire compartment plan.

Certification and installation are assessed together

A certified door cannot deliver its declared performance unless it is installed in accordance with that certificate. Frame fixing intervals, the application of fire mortar, and the hinge and lock hardware are inseparable parts of the certificate.

The mistakes seen most often on site

  • Removing or disabling the door closing mechanism (the door closer).
  • Holding the door permanently open with a wedge, a crate or a pallet.
  • Filling the gap between the frame and the wall with non-standard material.
  • Damaging the intumescent strip during installation.
